Kayaking is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the beautiful blue-and-white world of the peaceful polar seas
About

Explore the Arctic and Antarctic Coastline in a Kayak

Even after exploring shores, mountains, and spotting wildlife, there’s a whole world to discover on the water. Polar kayaking offers a unique way to experience the blue-and-white beauty of the polar seas, visiting stunning ice formations and waterways too small for our ships.

Polar kayaking provides an intimate tour of the Arctic and Antarctic landscapes, allowing close encounters with ice formations and tranquil waters.

Do I Need to Be an Experienced Kayaker?

Experience requirements depend on the cruise. For beginners, our Basecamp voyages offer a great introduction to kayaking. The most challenging part is often getting into the kayak; once you're in, keeping a steady paddle rhythm is key.

Some cruises require more kayaking experience due to longer excursions and potentially rougher water conditions. You won't need to perform a kayak roll, but you should be comfortable in a sea kayak. Guides reserve the right to refuse access to kayaks if safety is a concern.

How Physically Fit Do I Need to Be?

Kayaking demands good physical shape and balance, as it can be challenging on core and arm muscles. Our equipment fits various sizes, but larger individuals should consider the suitability of this activity. Guests above the maximum weight for our kayaks cannot participate.

For more information, check our kayaking FAQ or contact us with any questions.

How Many Times Can I Go Kayaking?

On Basecamp trips, we aim for each guest to kayak once. On regular voyages, we aim for four to six excursions per passenger with a kayaking supplement. Weather and water conditions always determine the availability of kayaking activities, prioritizing your safety.

Is Polar Kayaking Safe?

Our kayaking outings are led by certified and experienced guides. Safety precautions are paramount when kayaking in polar regions. We provide suitable outer clothing and limit kayak excursions to 14 passengers per guide. A support kayak and a safety boat accompany each group.

Do I Have to Bring My Own Kayaking Equipment?

We provide the following items:

  • Seven double-seat sea kayaks on Plancius & Ortelius
  • 14 double-seat sea kayaks on Hondius
  • Paddles with anti-drip rings
  • Basic (4 mm neoprene) wetsuits in various sizes
  • Kayak spray cover
  • Waterproof lightweight jacket (cagoule)
  • Life jacket / kayak vest
  • Neoprene boots

Please bring the following gear:

  • Thermal underwear, bottom and top (for under the wetsuit)
  • Fleece jacket or vest
  • Insulated gloves or neoprene watersport gloves
  • Waterproof bag (for camera or binoculars)
  • Fleece hat
  • Turtleneck or neck gaiter
  • Thick socks
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock

Avoid cloth clothing like T-shirts or jeans as they retain moisture, making them uncomfortable in polar weather.

What Will I See While Kayaking?

Kayaking offers views of rugged shorelines, snow-capped mountains, pristine beaches, and brilliant blue icebergs. The peaceful nature of kayaking enhances wildlife sightings, making it a truly immersive experience.

Greenland: Where the Kayak Was Invented

If you've ever enjoyed kayaking, you owe a debt of gratitude to the ancient Greenlandic Inuit who originally designed them for hunting. The thrilling adventures people now have navigating some of the world's most challenging rapids wouldn't be possible without the Inuit's need for a nimble form of water transportation. While travelers still use kayaks in this region, they are typically not fishing, whaling, or sealing. Consequently, recreational kayaks have been adapted to fit their new role.

Eight Ultimate Antarctica Adventures

Antarctica has adventure in its bones. Long before most travelers even reach the continent, they have to cross the Drake Passage, an oft-tumultuous waterway considered by many a hallmark of high adventure in itself. Once you do reach the Antarctic shores, the variations of landscape and wildlife are as multiform as the activities you can pursue there. While not all of these activities can or should be shoehorned into a single article, this piece will give you a survey of the top eight. Like everything in the polar regions, these activities are subject to weather conditions – and your own threshold for adventure.
